Designing a Bedroom for Menopause: Creating a calm and comfortable haven

Updated: May 2

Hello, my name is Michaela Clarke, from House of Lexden! Today, let's talk about something incredibly important: designing a bedroom specifically personalised to support women going through menopause.

I believe wealthy Victorians were on to something and the simple answer is separate bedrooms! Or better still, you could think about doing a Helen Bonham-Carter and Tim Burton and live in adjoining houses!!! Well maybe that is a bit extreme, but I can see you’re considering it!

As an interior designer, I've seen first-hand how the right design choices can profoundly impact comfort and well-being, especially during life transitions like menopause. It’s important to understand the effects Menopause can have on Sleep: it isn't just a biological process; it's a journey that brings about significant changes in a woman's body and lifestyle.

Sleep disturbances such as insomnia is a very common symptom. Hands up who’s been awake at three in the morning and not gone back to sleep till just before the alarm sounds? Other symptoms like hot flashes, and night sweats are common and can disrupt rest and overall quality of life during this time, increasing stress levels. They rise in cortisol levels can impair cognitive function. Lack of sleep can really affect our overall emotional well-being.

Here are my tips to help you create a Menopause-

Friendly Bedroom:

1.Temperature Control and Bedding materials

Menopausal women often struggle with temperature regulation and suffer from night sweats, so it's crucial to design a bedroom that offers flexibility. Opt for breathable sleep wear and bedding sheets like cotton or linen and consider incorporating air con or portable fan for personalised comfort.

2.Mattress Selection

Investing in a supportive mattress can make a world of difference for women experiencing joint pain and night sweats. Experiment with different pillow types to find the perfect balance of comfort and support to the neck and spine. I cannot recommend a particular mattress as the choice is a personal and everyone has different needs and preferences, so I suggest you visit a showroom, have a laydown and try not to fall asleep!

3.Window Treatments and Lighting:

Dark, restful sleep environments are essential for menopausal women. I suggest blackout blinds, curtains, or shutters to help block out light and create a serene atmosphere. Adjustable lighting, like dimmer switches or bedside wall lights or table lamps, can also enhance relaxation before bedtime. I recommend a low colour temperature light bulb as this can help you feel sleepy.

4.Clutter-Free and Calming Décor

Keep your bedroom clutter free as this will promote a sense of calm and relaxation, which is essential for a good night's sleep. Choose lots of storage such as bedside tables, and wardrobes will help with this. Choose soothing paint colours like neutrals, greens or soft pinks, comfortable textures, and incorporate natural elements like plants to create a tranquil atmosphere that promotes restorative rest.

5.Night-time routines

Encourage healthy sleep habits by establishing a consistent bedtime routine. We all know limiting screen time before bed is important and maybe charging your phone in another room is a good idea. Designate a relaxation area within the bedroom for activities like lighting a scented candle, reading or meditation to promote relaxation. Designing a bedroom tailored to the needs of menopausal women requires careful consideration of comfort, functionality, and aesthetics.

By incorporating the above elements can help create a comfortable haven where you can rest, rejuvenate, and navigate the challenges of menopause with greater ease and comfort. Remember, good design is for everyone, and creating a menopause-friendly bedroom is a worthwhile investment in your well-being.
