5 tips to help you get cosy for Autumn: nurture that hygge feeling within your home

Updated: Oct 18, 2023

And just like that, Autumn has arrived!

Last week we were dressing in t-shirts and flip flops, this week we are picking up our jackets and covering up our toes. As the days become shorter and cooler, it’s time to give your home a warm and cosy makeover.

Preparing your home for autumn isn’t just about practicalities, it’s about creating a home that is warm-hearted and inviting. Creating cosier spaces stimulates atmosphere that makes us feel, secure, safe and cuddled. It prepares us for the approaching harsher winter months.

Here is my guide with easy steps on how to make your home autumnal ready and for you to embrace your ’Hygge,’ a Scandinavian lifestyle and cultural philosophy that promotes contentment and well-being.

Clean up and de-clutter

A clean and uncluttered organised space is a good place to start with creating your autumnal interior design ideas. Clear away summer additions, have a deep clean, and let’s get started.

Embrace Autumnal Colours

When we think of Autumn, we think about sunsets, falling leaves, changing colours of the landscape replicating warm earthy tones. These colours can easily be infused into your interior design projects. House of Lexden, suggest you think about paint colours like deep reds, burnt oranges, rich browns and muted yellows - and why not add a pop of muted pink to create interest. You can embrace these colours by adding various textiles such as cushions, throws and rugs. You could even consider painting a room or a feature wall.

Style your room with cosy textures

Swap out the cottons and lightweight summer fabrics with luxurious velvet cushions, soft woollen throws, sheepskins and chunky textured rugs. These additions not only provide comfort but add visual warmth. Your living room and bedrooms will love you for it!

Lighting and seasonal Scents

As the days get shorter, lighting becomes more important. Choose soft lighting such as table lamps, or a string of fairy lights with warmer hues. Invest in some beautiful candles, as not only do they create a warm inviting atmosphere, they’ll also fill your home with incredible aromas helping you relax and to unwind. Personally, I love Fig and Rosemary.

First Impressions

Why not create your own front door wreath using autumn foliage, to add to that welcoming first impression. This incredible design was created by award winning Essex florist Cloud Hill Flowers. Plant up some pots using gorgeous heathers in an array of colours, these will last through the winter months.

So embrace your Hygge, find the joy in the simple things. Create a home where you can relax, connect with loved ones over a warm cup of tea and a wedge of cake. Now who doesn’t love cake?
